One of the most exciting events for us as Atlassian Expert and for me personally is the annual AtlasCamp; beside of new major releases of Jira and Confluence of course. This year Atlassian invited Experts, developers and plugin vendors to wonderful Barcelona for three days packed full with talks, tutorials and networking. This place was a good choise: . Barcelona is a wonderful city and provided a perfect environment for this event. The surrounding intensified the discussions with other participants and increased the development of new ideas. Thank you for this, Atlassian.
This blog post is a short recap of our three primary takeaways from the conference, which I think, are the most interesting things for us and our customers.
Trying to use one of these tools from within a browser on a mobile phone never had been a nice experience, even after Atlassian provided a mobile web interface a few years ago. At least for Jira there were a few alternatives available within the app stores. But to be honest, they never fulfilled the expectations I have got for a mobile JIRA/Confluence client.
The good news are, Atlassian is aware of this and the increasing need to be able to work with their tools via mobile clients. In result, they presented the first versions of native mobile clients for Jira and Confluence. And they are available in the Apple AppStore since Monday. A version for Android should follow soon.
The sad news is, both clients only work the cloud products from Atlassian right now. But based on the new mobile strategy I am confident, that the support for the server versions of Jira and Confluence will follow.
If you are interested further in this topic, take a look at this two blog posts from Atlassian about the new mobile clients:
Looking at the strong investment Atlassian did the last years within the cloud sector, you could have got the impression there is no future for the server offerings much longer. This topic kept us busy for a while now. Cloud is a very interesting topic with a lot of benefits. But with our focus on customers in Europe and especially Germany, it is also a very difficult runtime environment. Regulations and legal aspects make it almost impossible for our customers to bring business critical systems into the cloud. Even more it is important for our customers, that Atlassian keeps providing their amazing products and platform for on-premises usage.
And that’s exactly what Atlassian is going to do, or as they stated: "Cloud or server, the customers choose". This way, with Atlassian and Syracom, you keep having two strong partners on your side for all your enterprise needs. And you can rely on your beloved solutions based on Jira and Confluence.
Despite that we are aware that cloud is a big topic we should not ignore. And the development into the direction of "software as a service" will not stop and will become more and more important. As Atlassian Experts we will keep an eye on it, in order to provide the same service, we provide our server customers also to cloud users. For us applies the same as Atlassian says: cloud or server, you - our customer - choose.
Most surprising event on AtlasCamp was a message we received on the first day from another plugin vendor. He asked if he could use our logo for a presentation and if we could meet during the day. This message came from TechTime, a company from New Zealand and vendor of EasySSO: a very promising Single Sign On solution for the Atlassian platform.
As their customers repeatedly asked for a two factor authentication (2FA) in combination with the SSO functionality, TechTime decided to integrate our Secure Login solution for Jira and Confluence with their EasySSO solution. Both plugins play very well together and provide customers a great package for their security needs. In case you only need either SSO or 2FA, take a look on the plugins independently on the Atlassian marketplace or use them in combination.
The Atlassian platform will keep fulfilling your business needs. Regardless if you are a server or cloud customer, your investment in the platform is safe and secure. And even the increasing needs of our modern times to be able to work independently from time and location, is addressed with the new native clients for mobile access. But most important you can see, Atlassian, the Atlassian Experts and Add-On vendors keep working close together in order to fulfill your business needs.
With syracom consulting AG you have a partner on your side, who is part of this collaboration and who is appreciating being part of it. And I am sure, a lot more things are coming...
